Usa-se by para mostrar como algo é feito:

Ex.: Ex.: Something happens by mistake, by accident or by chance.

Usa-se by para mostrar como alguém viaja:

Ex.: They came by car/ by taxi/ by train/ by plane.

Usa-se by com –ing para mostrar como alguma coisa aconteceu:

Ex.: She passed her test by studying hard.

By pode ser usado depois alguns adjetivos:

Ex.: We were surprised by the news.

By pode ser usar também pelos pronomes reflexivos, para indicar que o sujeito fez tal ação sozinho:

Ex.: I stayed at home by myself and read the newspaper.
