What is a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is a group of words that functions as a verb and is made up of a verb plus a preposition, an adverb, or both. They are important in English. Here are 3 phrasal verbs that you may already know:

• check in     Guests cannot check in at the hotel before 4:00 PM.

• give in       The workers’ strike has been going on for weeks, and neither side seems willing to give in.

• look out for   In the winter, drivers need to look out for icy spots on the roads.

Why are phrasal verbs important? It is important to learn phrasal verbs because they are very common in English, and because the meaning of a verb often changes significantly when it is used in a phrasal verb. (Britannica)

Phrasal verbs mais usados em inglês (Não precisa copiar esta parte)

1. Answer: responder

• Answer back: responder de forma grosseira/contestar/retrucar. Exemplo: His daughter answered him back (A filha dele lhe respondeu com grosseria).

• Answer for: responder por/ser responsável por. Exemplo: I’ll answer for him (Eu responderei por ele).

2. Ask: perguntar    

• Ask after: perguntar por. Exemplo: He asked after you (Ele perguntou por você).

• Ask for: pedir/solicitar. Exemplo: She asked for help (Ela pediu ajuda).

3. Break: quebrar

• Break up: separar-se de alguém Exemplo: They broke up two months ago (Eles se separaram dois meses atrás).

• Break off: romper/interromper um compromisso ou relações diplomáticas. Exemplo: The president threatened to  break off diplomatic relations (O presidente ameaçou romper as relações diplomáticas).

• Break down: quebrar/decompor-se Exemplo: The car broke down on the way to Madrid (O carro quebrou no caminho a Madrid).

4. Bring: trazer

• Bring back: devolver. Exemplo: I’ll bring your book back tomorrow (Eu devolverei seu livro amanhã).

• Bring down: reduzir. Exemplo: The measure brought the crime figures down (A medida reduziu as taxas de criminalidade).

• Bring up: criar. Exemplo: I was brought up by my aunt (Eu fui criada pela minha tia).

5. Call: chamar/ligar

• Call back: ligar de volta/retornar uma ligação. Exemplo: I’ll call you back as soon as possible (Eu retornarei sua ligação assim que possível).

• Call for: pedir/exigir. Exemplo: He called for silence (Eu pediu silêncio).

• Call off: cancelar um evento. Exemplo: Martha called off the wedding (Martha cancelou o casamento).

6. Carry: carregar/levar

• Carry on: continuar. Exemplo: Carry on the good work (Continue fazendo um bom trabalho).

• Carry off: suceder/conquistar/conseguir fazer algo. Exemplo: She carried off the dance routine perfectly. (Ela conseguiu fazer a coreografia perfeitamente).

• Carry out: realizar. Exemplo: Only health-service personnel may carry out surgeries (Apenas profissionais de saúde podem realizar cirurgias).

7. Check: checar/verificar

• Check in: registrar-se. Exemplo: She hasn’t checked in yet (Ela não se registrou ainda).

• Check out: sair/deixar. Exemplo: They already checked out of the hotel (Elas já deixaram o hotel).

8. Come: vir/chegar

• Come back: voltar. Exemplo: I just came back from Mexico (Eu acabei de voltar do México).

• Come in: entrar/ficar em uma posição. Exemplo: She came in second (Ela ficou em segundo lugar).

• Come from: vir de. Exemplo: Laura comes from abroad (Laura vem do exterior).

• Come down: descer/desmoronar. Exemplo: Many people came to see how the famous castle came down (Muitas pessoas vieram ver como o famoso castelo desmoronou).

9. Drive: dirigir

• Drive off: ir embora/partir. Exemplo: I saw him drive off in his car (Eu o vi indo embora de carro).

10. Fill: preencher

• Fill in: preencher/completar. Exemplo: Fill in the fields below (Preencha os campos abaixo).

• Fill up: encher completamente/abastecer. Exemplo: Please fill up the car before our roadtrip (Por favor, abasteça o carro antes da nossa viagem).

11. Find: encontrar

• Find out: descobrir. Exemplo: My parents found out about my grades (Meus pais descobriram as minhas notas).

12. Give: dar

• Give away: doar/presentear. Exemplo: My dad will give money away to help abandoned puppies (Meu pai doará dinheiro para ajudar filhotes abandonados).

• Give back: devolver. Exemplo: She gave him back his book (Ela devolveu o livro para ele).

• Give in: desistir/ceder. Exemplo: I give in, I can’t (Eu desisto, eu não consigo).

• Give

• Give up - Desistir- No matter how long it takes, I will not give up.

• Give away - Doar, dar - When we decided to move in together, I had to give all my furniture away.

13. Go: ir

• Go on: seguir/continuar. Exemplo: I can’t go on, I’m too tired (Eu não posso continuar, estou cansado demais).

• Go over: repassar, revisar. Exemplo: I’ll meet you downstairs to go over the results (Eu o encontrarei lá embaixo para revisar os resultados).

• Go out – Sair de casa It’s our wedding anniversary, of course I want to go out tonight!

• Go through – Superar após alguma situação desagradável

14. Keep: manter

• Keep away: afastar/manter longe. Exemplo: This is to keep away the bad vibes (Isto é para afastar as vibrações ruins).

• Keep on: seguir/continuar. Exemplo: We must keep on working (Nós devemos seguir trabalhando).

• Keep up: acompanhar/manter-se em dia. Exemplo: It’s challenging for him to keep up with technology (Para ele, é um desafio acompanhar a tecnologia).

15. Look: olhar

• Look after: cuidar. Exemplo: He doesn’t look after himself (Ele não se cuida).

• Look away: desviar o olhar/olhar para outro lado. Exemplo: I looked away (Eu desviei o olhar).

• Look for: buscar/procurar. Exemplo: Are you looking for your cat? (Você está procurando pelo seu gato?).

• Look forward to - Esperar ansiosamente por algo. I look forward to my birthday.

•  Look out - Manter-se alerta, tomar cuidado. Look out for bees. 

16. Make: fazer

• Make up: maquiar. Exemplo: Kim taught me how to make up (Kim me ensinou a me maquiar).

17. Pick: escolher

• Pick out: escolher/eleger. Exemplo: Thanks for helping me pick out the gift (Obrigado por me ajudar a escolher o presente).

• Pick up: pegar/buscar. Exemplo: You can pick me up at the airport (Você pode me pegar no aeroporto).

18. Put: pôr/colocar

• Put on: pôr/colocar/vestir algo. Exemplo: Put your coat on (Vista seu casaco).

• Put out: colocar para fora. Exemplo: Have you put the dog out? (Você colocou o cachorro para fora?)

• Put down – Menosprezar - Nobody likes him at the office, he always puts down all the employees.

• Put up with – Tolerar- Adam is so annoying, I just can’t put up with him!

19. Run: correr

• Run out: esgotar/acabar. Exemplo: The fuel will run out one day (O combustível se esgotará um dia).

• Run over: atropelar/passar por cima. Exemplo: Slow down! We don’t want to run over somebody (Devagar! Não queremos atropelar ninguém).

20. Take: tomar/pegar

• Take after: parecer-se. Exemplo: She doesn’t take after her mother at all (Ela não se parece com a mãe dela).

• Take away: levar/tirar/retirar. Exemplo: Two more to take away, please (Mais dois para retirada, por favor).

• Take out: retirar/eliminar. Exemplo: We should take out that claim we made in the article (Nós deveríamos retirar aquela afirmação que fizemos no artigo).

• Take back: retornar/levar de volta. Exemplo: I took the plates back to the kitchen (Eu levei os pratos de volta para a cozinha).

21.Talk: falar

• Talk about: falar sobre. Exemplo: We’ll talk about it when you’re calmer (Nós falaremos sobre isso quando você estiver mais calmo).

• Talk back: retrucar/responder mal. Exemplo: He is very polite and doesn’t talk back to his parents (Ele é muito educado e não retruca os pais dele).

• Talk over: conversar/discutir. Exemplo: There’s something I want to talk over with you (Tem um negócio que eu quero conversar com você).

22. Tell: dizer

• Tell off: repreender/destratar. Exemplo: She told him off after she was late again (Ela o destratou depois de se atrasar novamente).

• Tell on: denunciar/dedurar. Exemplo: Don’t tell on us! (Não dedure a gente!)

23. Turn: virar/girar

• Turn up: aumentar o volume. Exemplo: Could you turn the music up? (Você poderia aumentar a música?)

• Turn down: baixar o volume. Exemplo: It’s time to turn down the volume (Está na hora de baixar o volume).

• Turn around: contornar/dar meia-volta. Exemplo: Now turn around and get home (Agora dê meia-volta e vá para casa).

• Turn on: acender/ligar. Exemplo: I’m going to turn on the heater  because it’s very cold (Eu vou ligar o aquecedor porque está muito frio).

• Turn off: apagar/desligar. Exemplo: I’ve forgot to turn off the TV (Eu esqueci de desligar a TV).

24. Walk: caminhar

• Walk away: ir embora/virar as costas. Exemplo: The actress walked away plenty of times (A atriz foi embora muitas vezes).

• Walk in: entrar. Exemplo: When they walk in there will be sweets on the table (Quando eles entrarem haverá doces sobre a mesa).

• Walk off: sair/ir embora. Exemplo: You can’t just walk off and leave me here (Você não pode simplesmente sair e me deixar aqui).

25. Work: trabalhar

• Work out: exercitar-se/malhar Exemplo: You can work out 5 days a week (Você pode se exercitar 5 dias por semana)

26. Figure out - Entender

After her phone call, I figured out what has happened. 

27. Get up - Significado: levantar

Exemplo: We recently started to get up early and that’s amazing! 

Get back/Go back . Significado: voltar

Exemplo: Let’s get back home.

Count on - Contar com alguém.

• You can count on me. (Você pode contar comigo.)

Find out - Descobrir

She found out the truth when she read the message. 

Lay down - Colocar algo sobre uma superfície.

• Please don’t lay your coat down on the couch. 

Line up - Formar uma fila.  Line up for lunch. 

 Hold on - Esperar por um curto período de tempo. Hold on, please. 

Mess up - Bagunçar; estragar tudo em uma situação.

• Don't mess things up. 

Screw up- Cometer um erro, fazer "uma cagada", estragar tudo em uma situação. Sinônimo de "to mess up", mas mais vulgar.

• You screwed up, now don't blame me! 

Set up - Organizar uma atividade ou evento. Também pode significar "configurar" ou "montar" algo; ou ainda "armar uma armadilha" para alguém.

• We should set up a celebration for your 50th birthday. 

Settle down - Começar a viver uma vida estável e de rotina, sossegar.

• Are you ready to settle down? 

Stand for - Apoiar uma ideia, crença, etc.

• We stand for democracy. 

Throw away - Jogar fora.

• Don't throw away this magazine. 

Throw up - Vomitar. - I threw up yesterday. 

Try on - Experimentar uma peça de roupa.

• Can I try on this jacket? 

I had to go through that experience to learn the lesson.

Hurry up- Apressar-se. - Hurry up, girls. 

Watch out - Manter-se alerta, tomar cuidado.
